Help us increase the museum collection!
In addition to mounting temporary exhibitions, the musée des impressionnismes Giverny aims also to develop its permanent collecton so it has implemented a purchasing policy. Still modest, it is strictly linked to the museum's missions and generously underwritten by its donors. Your help is invaluable!
The Acquisition of Gustave Caillebotte’s Parterre de marguerites
In April 2016, the musée des impressionnismes Giverny appealed to your generosity to help us acquire the Parterre de marguerites (1892–1893) by Gustave Caillebotte.
This large work measuring 200 x 100 cm was rediscovered during preparations for the Caillebotte, Painter and Gardener exhibition, which was curated by Marina Ferretti, the museum’s Director for Exhibitions and Research, and was held in Giverny from 25 March to 3 July, 2016. The museum wanted to make the Parterre de marguerites one of the jewels in its collection.

Why acquire works of art?
Acquiring works of art, when it is possible and appropriate, is one of a museum’s fundamental missions. It is a way of saving a piece of artistic heritage and of creating a coherent collection to show to the public. This is the case with this work by Caillebotte, which fits into the theme of the musée des impressionnismes Giverny.
Why this work in particular?
Gustave Caillebotte was one of the impressionists who was closest to Monet. Not only was he his friend and patron, but he also discussed questions relating to art and gardens extensively with him. This work was a major source of inspiration to Monet during the last thirty years of his life. With its decorative dimension and Japanese influence, it sheds new light on the approach adopted by Monet in the Water-lilies. For all of these reasons, we are convinced that this work belongs at the musée des impressionnismes Giverny.
What will happen to the work after it has been acquired?
The aim of acquiring a work of art is to display it to the public while preserving it from the vicissitudes of time. It will be possible to include the work in the museum’s permanent display, and it might also be lent to other institutions for relevant exhibitions. It will probably be left to rest for a while in the museum’s storerooms, where the restoration team will examine its condition regularly. It might also undergo treatments such as framing and cleaning, and it will be documented. A file will be created gathering together everything we know about the Parterre de marguerites. It will also be possible to create a digital image of the work, which could be put online together with the file.
Thanks to all our donors!
In addition to the donations made by many companies and by the Museum Friends' Society, the museum was given more than €43000 by private individuals who committed to our project. We are very grateful towards all the people who helped us acquire the Parterre de marguerites by Caillebotte. Download the complete list of donors.
