About
TAIKAN / MONET
Japanese Impressions
This unprecedented exhibition will bring two giants of art history into dialogue: one, Claude Monet, famous the world over; the other, Yokoyama Taikan, little known outside Japan, where he is nonetheless a national icon.
Both artists overturned the academic conventions of their time: Monet through Impressionism, Taikan as a pioneering figure of nihonga, the Japanese art movement born in the 1880s, during the Meiji era.
Both were remarkable observers of nature. Taikan sought to capture its spiritual essence, while Monet focused on his visual perception of it, immersing himself in the landscape to do so. For each painter, this artistic quest took the form of repeated emblematic motifs: just as Monet immortalised his water lilies with obsessive persistence, Taikan returned again and again to the image of Mount Fuji.
The two artists also shared the importance they gave to their gardens, in Giverny and in Tokyo, conceived as sources of inspiration and extensions of their art, and which can still be admired today.
This summer exhibition, the fruit of an exceptional partnership with the Yokoyama Taikan Memorial Hall in Tokyo, will celebrate two masters who offered a vision of reality that is both dreamlike and universal.
